“Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee.” (Genesis 12:1)
At one point or another in each of our lives, we will hear God tell us to go to a certain place or position ourselves in a certain way so that He can use us for His glory. There are places that He wants us to be at specific times so that He can show Himself through our lives or message in the life of someone else. In order to be faithful servants of our Heavenly Father, we need to be willing to listen to Him and faithfully follow His commands.
In the book of Genesis, God told Abraham to leave his family and go to a land that He would tell him. He didn’t tell him the exact location. He just told him to ‘Get up and Go’. Sometimes, God will tell us where He wants us to go without giving us the exact location. And like Abraham, we must trust God so much so that we just get up and Go–without question. Sometimes, we may know exactly where God wants us to go, but like a soldier in the military who must be ready to go to any location at any time, God can change our direction and location in the blink of an eye.
The Bible offers numerous stories of God telling His children to go. Those who heeded God’s call and went willingly like Abraham, were blessed beyond measure. Others, like Jonah, who heard God’s call but refused to go, were punished (and they still had to go). Right now, God may be calling you to the mission field, to work as a youth camp leader, to be a preacher, a teacher, or a writer. It may be something as big and long-term as that. Or, right now, He may be calling you to do something as simple as sitting in a certain seat on the school bus so that the person who sits next to you can hear about Jesus, taking a different route to school or work, or calling up a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while. Whatever it is God is calling you to do or wherever God is calling you to go right now, do it, go there, obey.
Don’t fear doing something you’ve never done before or going somewhere you’ve never been before. God is with you to guide you and help you along the way. We gain experience as we go to new places and willingly serve God in our calling. Sometimes, He calls us to a temporary place to prepare us for our ultimate destination. Other times, He places us right where He wants us so that we can grow into the people He wants us to be.
God is calling each and every one of us to Go. The choice is up to us whether we heed His call. We can choose to be like Jonah–rebellious and stagnant to the will of God; or we can choose to be like Abraham–obedient, willing and open to the will of God. If we are like Abraham, God will open up doors for us that no man can shut and bless us beyond our wildest imagination. Now is your moment to Get up and Go!
Lord, open up our ears to hear Your voice, open up our hearts to be willing to go wherever you want us to go, open up our minds to see opportunities and possibilities that You divinely present before us. Deliver us from disobedience and running away from you like Jonah. Help us instead to be like Abraham, willing and ready to be obedient to Your call, to go where you tell us to go, and to trust You wholeheartedly every step of the way. We embrace not only the journey but also the victory and the blessing that comes from obedience. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
